Personally, I am a huge. huge fan of vinyl wall art to begin with. I have a decal in literally every room of my house. They are affordable, durable, in some cases reusable,  and can be removed with almost no effort. And most importantly, they are beautiful, stylish and sure to add interest to any room, for just a fraction of the price of traditional wall art.

Urban Walls is owned by a wonderful lady by the name of Danielle Hardy, who somehow manages to raise two active boys while also being an amazing graphic artist and designer. She was awesome enough to work out a deal with me that allowed me to get this amazing piece for my sons room for just the cost of materials, and we couldn’t be more pleased with it:

As I mentioned, my house is filled with vinyl decals, and my sons room is no exception, (as you can see from the owl on the other wall.) But this piece is the favorite by far.

Vinyl wall decals can be applied to walls that have been painted with eggshell, matte, satin or semi-gloss. They do not recommend installing on a surface with highly textured concrete or stucco or a drywall/primer finish. However, my walls are all textured and I have not had any issues with the vast majority of the decals I’ve used, including these.

With some other decals I have used, I have run into issues. Some of them fell off the wall immediately upon application. I applied one set, only to walk into the room the next day to find leaves and flowers littering the floor. Some came in approximately 1, 345 pieces and had to be assembled from scratch without so much as a picture to instruct us. Some were impossible to reposition, and some got stuck to its own backing and wouldn’t come unstuck without tearing.

You won’t have any of these issues with decals from urban walls. The only warning I have to give, is that, if applying your decal to the wall in a small childs room, be sure it is out of the reach of small, curious hands. As you can see by the picture, I applied my owls and trees over my sons crib. He got bored during naptime, and proceeded to pick off as much of the tree as he could reach and crinkling it up and ripping it. The parts that were not actually ripped off, actually smoothed back out and look as good as new now, I was amazed at how durable these are.

So we know they are made well, but let’s get to the important stuff: How do they look?

Created and owned by Daphne Cohan a creative mother of three who hails from Asheville, North Carolina, this Etsy shop has quickly become one of my favorite places to love. When she’s not chasing after children or sewing up awesome stuff for me to buy, she can be found knitting, stamping, printing, growing things, or playing with food alongside her husband.

(I’m not really sure what “playing with food” means exactly, but if she cooks half as well as she sews, then we will be over for dinner tonight. Lets say seven?)

Browsing through Daphnes Etsy shop is a dangerous thing, as you are likely to get sucked in by the pretty pretty colors and patterns of the products she creates. So far, our absolute favorites are the reusable snack and sandwich bags, of which she was kind enough to send us a set. We love them so much we plan to go back and buy this set too:

Basically, I’d be hard pressed to find a pattern I don’t love. (You can check them all out yourself here, there may be one or two left that are not pictured above.)

All of her snack bags are made from 100% cotton or organic cotton and recycled hemp on the outside, with food safe, BPA and phthalate free nylon interiors. (Cotton can be used instead, upon request.) The Velcro closures keep food safely inside and there are tabs on either side for easy opening by hands large and small. When mine get dirty, I flip them inside-out and simply rinse them off, and if they need a deeper cleaning than that, you can simply throw them in with your laundry. (They come with detailed care instructions as well.) They are available in two sizes, the sandwich size and the snack size. Any pattern available can be made in either size upon request, and anything with lettering can be personalized. As always, when buying handmade, you get the personal touch and level of customer service that you won’t find anywhere else.

Made with care out of 100% unbleached cotton, and printed with non-toxic water based inks, these bags are perfect for trips to the farmers market or grocery. They keep your apples from touching your meat, close securely with a cotton drawstring, and can be reused endlessly. They are available in a few different patterns at the link above and new designs pop up often.

As with the snack bags, the re-usability of these helps cut down on waste. Most people I know throw away those thin plastic bags that are generally used when purchasing produce in the grocery store, as they are too think to really be reused for anything else, and most people don’t reuse Ziplock and sandwich bags either, because, well. Ew. So these bags are not only adorable, but they are making a difference as well. Every little bit really does count!

Jane sews these critters up on an old industrial sewing machine and then stuffs them and does the detail by hand. She recycles the best scraps and bits from all over to make the clothing for each creature and each friend comes lovingly gift wrapped with their own story. They make adorable gifts for the nature loving kids in your life.

Don’t have kids? As I inadvertently discovered, dogs love them too. (Did I mention the bird squeaks?) I’ve caught both of my pups red-handed, (er, red-pawed ?) in the act of trying to abscond with Mr. Squeaky McSqueak Bird the Third numerous times. They watch with rapt fascination and a bit of drool as Elijah enjoys his toy. I guess, don’t give this to a large dog, unless you want to be able to squeeze her belly and make her squeak.

As you may have noticed, we have been having a bit of technical difficulty lately.  Please excuse the look of the site as we work behind the scenes to improve things for you.I know it’s a little hectic-looking right now, but that’s temporary, we promise!

As for posts, between the craziness of being at home with a million children all summer and several of us dealing with either newborns or serious chronic illnesses, we have had almost no time left to actually write anything. (And when we do have time, something on the site breaks.) It sort-of feels like the universe has been conspiring against us lately.

Luckily, the planets have re-aligned and school has started up again. So keep an eye out for a bunch of new reviews, giveaways. And, and, and- this is the best part- some wonderful new reviewers and guest posts that we are so excited for and can’t wait to tell you about.

Also-If you’ve sent us a product and have been waiting for a review-we appreciate your amazing patience, and have not forgotten about you. We’ve tried to keep everyone updated as best as possible and your features will be up as soon as humanly possible!

Over the next week,  we will also be starting our “Love Cloth” feature, where we will be highlighting and giving away several different cloth diapers and accessories among the usual fare. We can’t tell you (Rockingreen) what they (SkullyButts) are yet, but we promise, (FuzziBunz) if you love cloth, you will love this feature!

Hey everyone! Yes, we know, it’s been slow in LHR land lately, and we apologize. The good news is, we’ve got some wonderful stuff lined up for you, including some more neat handmade treasures, some awesome shape wear and a whole week of cloth diaper madness, so stay tuned.

First things first. Today we’d like to introduce you to an amazing company that we just adore.

Meet Baby Keba, a wonderful new baby clothing site that was founded by the amazing Makeba Gies. Baby Keba is the place to go for environmentally friendly, eco-conscious clothing that is made with quality and comfort in mind.

This excerpt from the site says it all:

Baby Keba is the manifestation of Makeba Gies’ dream to design infant clothing and accessories that are durable yet incredibly soft to the touch. She set out to create a line that is both healthy for infants as well as the environment. Years of dedication and research within the manufacturing and garment industry helped Makeba turn this fusion of ‘Environmentally Green’ and ‘Luxurious Comfort’ into a reality.

Makeba started out designing clothes for her dolls as a child, and fortunately for us, she kept at it, and now designs clothing for children professionally, and even has a line for expectant mothers in the works! She joined the world of fashion as a catalog  model, and was able to travel the world and learn about materials and manufacturing companies. She then took the knowledge she had gained and turned it into a career as a  clothing designer, imparting  her clothing with her unique sense of elegant, timeless style.

The Good:

Soft, Soft Soft!

Makeba was wonderful enough to send out a variety of clothes and blankets for the babies on our team. And the unanimous response from all of our reviewers was essentially :”ZOMG this stuff is so soft! Squee!” Everyone that touches this fabric marvels over the softness and luxurious feel of it. And that’s no accident. Makeba searched far and wide for a truly organic material to craft her clothing with that was not only eco-conscious, but also soft, and she rejected several before finding just the right material.

If you are at all familiar with organic clothing, you know that it can be hit or miss when it comes to comfort. Some of the brands we have tried have hit the mark, but many others fall short and leave you with a crunchy, scratchy uncomfortable garment that you don’t want against your babies sensitive skin. I mean, really, who wants to dress their children in clothes that are stiff enough to stand up on their own?

Organic

All of Baby Keba’s Clothing is made with 100% certified organic Pima Cotton imported from Peru, that is farmed using old world methods- without toxins, chemicals and synthetic fertilizers. Makeba Gies created this line with the goal of creating comfortable, beautiful clothing that was safe for children and the environment as well.

Every time we check out the Baby Keba Site, there’s always something new to discover! They are constantly adding new lines and carrying new products. The Bad:

No Toddler Sizes!

Unfortunately, they don’t have much for babies over 12 months yet, although most of her clothing runs big, so keep this in mind when ordering.  The  dress on our model above is size 12 months and she’s 20 months old and nearly 30 lbs, if that tells you anything.

It’s no secret that most of the parents on our team here at LHR are obsessive and militant enthusiastic about cloth diapering.
Fortunately, we aren’t the only ones. We know that many of you are worshipers at the altar of the cloth as well. So for those of you that already love it, have we got a treat for you!

We’re kicking off our new feature section, “Love Cloth” this week, where we will be featuring, reviewing and of course giving away a pile of lovely treats that are sure to expand your stash over the coming weeks.

And-For those of you that may be on the fence about cloth, here’s your chance to get your hands on some free supplies, courtesy of some of our favorite cloth diaper brands and companies. Ok, not really.  But I do have  new wonderful and adorable wardrobe additions for my son now. Cloth diapering makes playing dress-up with your tiny-humans so much fun. Seriously. Wait until you see the handmade skull patterned cloth diapers, guys. You won’t believe the awesome.

Plus, the environment and stuff.

But, I digress. Back on topic.

To kick things off, we thought we’d start with a much loved favorite:
Rockin’ Green was awesome enough to be one of the first companies to let us review them, and they remain one of our favorite diaper detergents after a year of handling our worst laundry.  And, since we originally reviewed them, they have come out with a new formulation called “Funk Rock”, which we happen to- surprise- love.
Let’s face it, with cloth diapered kiddos, laundry is inevitable. Even if you use a service, there are still those occasions when you’ve just got to do a load at home, or while on vacation. And while most of us do our diaper laundry every few days at least, it turns out, that stuff smells. Who knew? Especially if you leave it sitting for a few days. Oops. Or you go on vacation and your husband lets things grow in the diaper pail because he can’t work the washer.  The truth is, no matter how often you wash  eventually there comes a point where your adorable shiny diapers end up with this smell that you just can’t get rid of. It’s called the dreaded diaper funk.

(Honestly, It mostly smells like ammonia.)

Lucky for us, Rockin’ Green has come out with a new formulation made specifically to combat the funk, appropriately titled “Funk Rock.” Which kicks the crap out of that smell on your diapers. Or that smell on your sheets. Probably that smell on your kid too, but we couldn’t get ours to stay in the washer long enough to check.

This detergent has saved my sanity and my nostrils much stress. Biodegradable, non-toxic and affordable, Rockin’ Green well, ROCKS. And it smells like candy. Yummy yummy candy. (Warning: Not actually candy. Do not Eat it.) With cutely-named scents such as Motle Clean, Rage Against The Raspberry, and Smashing Watermelons, there’s something for every, um, nose-taste.

Don’t have cloth and don’t want to? It’s also awesome for the kid laundry and pretty much everything else. What with the non-toxic, happy earth benefits and all, it’s sure not to irritate even the most sensitive of skin. And is perfect for kids with eczema. And for washing the funk out of the dog bed. And if you are one of those rare people who never has any funky laundry, it also comes in Hard Rock, Classic Rock and Soft Rock, so you can get one to match your water if needed.

I discovered Enfusia somewhat by accident while browsing the internet searching for organic personal care products. When I reached out to them, I was thrilled to discover that not only were they awesome, they were also a newer company based right down the street from me in the Woodlands, which is north of Houston-where I am currently located. Anne Marie, the creator of Faith With Roses, is a stay-at-home working mom of 2 wonderful children, a 9 year old boy and a 7 year old girl, and has a wonderful supportive husband. Her passion is working with her hands. She crochets, knits, draws, and makes hair bows. Through the past 5 years I have also been a full time care taker to my mother. She had a terminal cancer and was only supposed to live a few months to a year. We are a family of health, nutrition, organics, and for my mom, alternative medicine. Although she survived her cancer, and is completely cancer free, she did suffer a stroke 1.5 years ago, and is now in a nursing home. It was mom who always encouraged me to bring my Bows to local boutiques and shops in my area for resale. When my mom was going through her most trying times, I did just that, for her, for me, for the both of us. I have wonderful relationships with several shops who sell my product and keep me very busy. I find the “Hair Bow Making” to be very therapeutic.

I am glad she likes her therapy, because I sure do!

The Good:

Quality, Handmade Work

Anne Marie’s bows are gorgeous. She sent 4 for my girls to try. Being handmade, you can specify exactly what you want, including clip style. Madeleine still needs an alligator clip for her fine baby hair, but Chloe does better with the french clips, as her hair has become quite thick. So she sent two of each! They have held up very well in the time we have had them, still as fluffy as the day they arrived!

Variety

All-Natural Yumminess

We all know that your standard, run of the mill peanut butter has some not-so-good stuff in them.  But I have to admit, while I feed my kids the organic, natural peanut butter I personally prefer Jif for myself.  But not so with the Peanut Butter & Co. peanut butter!  It’s easy to use, doesn’t need stirring or refrigerating, and it tastes good!

Kosher, Gluten-free and Vegan (mostly)

If you have special dietary needs, this is the stuff for you. All of their peanut butter is kosher, gluten-free, and vegan (except for The Bee’s Knees, which is vegetarian).

Variety

From Smooth Operator and Crunch Time for the traditionalists to The Heat Is On and Dark Chocolate Dreams for the more adventurous, Peanut Butter & Co. has it all.  They have 10 different varieties to choose from.  And it’s not just for sandwiches!   I love the Dark Chocolate Dreams on bananas, and I am just waiting to make peanut butter cookies with it.  There’s even a whole blog worth of recipes to try!
